Back in 2006, Moretti began
losing weight and having digestion issues. We soon discovered he had what is called Small Intestine Bacteria Overgrowth
(SIBO). We were given some medical suggestions, but I had also been talking with other dog friends who swore by raw
feeding. I decided to try it, but was terrified - what if I do something wrong!?! I began with cooked hamburger
and rice, still afraid to feed raw. Eventually I began feeding the burger raw and then other raw meat and adding vegetables
with the help of a wonderful book called Raw Dog Food: Make It Easy for
You and Your Dog by Carina Beth MacDonald.
Yes, Moretti's SIBO vanished as a result of his IGA level rising
back into the normal range (much to the amazement of our internist veterinarian). Olive had had some thyroid issues
and those, too, have vanished!
It does take a little longer in the morning and evening
to prepare meals, and traveling takes some extra steps and effort, but our dogs are worth it! We believe food is fuel and
medicine for us and our dogs so we care about what we put into our bodies!
Below is a great quote from Oma's Pride "Our interest in raw diets for pets
developed several years ago when one of our beloved Golden Retrievers became seriously ill. We couldn't help but remember
how our mother had chided us for years for feeding commercial kibbles to our pets. "It's not real food," she used
to tell us. "In Europe, we fed our dogs and cats the same foods we ate." And then she'd ask, "Do you think
you'd be healthy today if I'd only fed you overcooked cereal?" "As we searched for ways to help our dog, we learned a lot more about nutrition for
small animals. And we realized that our Mom was right -- raw meat and bones, along with a little bit of fruit and vegetables,
were the diet nature intended for our furry family members. So we threw out the kibble and started feeding the raw meats and
bones we had so readily available to us. When friends and customers heard about how we were feeding our own animals, they
asked us if we'd sell them the same meats and bones we were using. And so began our Oma's Pride line of natural pet food."
