PUPPY-BUYERS! WHEN ASKING
SPINONE BREEDERS ABOUT THEIR PUPPIES, PLEASE KEEP THE FOLLOWING IN MIND:
Make sure only Spinoni who have been tested for hips, elbows
and shoulders as well as thyroid have been used in breedings. Ask to see proof (OFFA certification) of dam (mother)
and sire (father) from the American Orthopedic Foundation For Animals (OFFA). Also ask breeder if they have test results
for puppy's grandparents and great grandparents. The more dogs tested and with passing results in puppy's background,
the better! No test results, no sale!
Make sure dam (mother) and sire (father) have been tested and cleared through the Animal Health Trust
for Cerebellar Ataxia, also known as CA. (A disease particular to Spinoni.)
Make sure dam (mother) and sire (father) have up-to-date Canine
Eye Registration Foundation (CERF) certificates.
Know the Spinone breed standard and have a copy on hand. Stay clear of breeders who do not know
the Spinone breed standard or who cannot provide you with a copy of the Spinone breed standard. (See breed info page
on this website for AKC Spinone breed standard.)
Be aware of and understand the Spinone's faults and health problems - every breed has some.
Avoid the breeder/seller who says there is none or doesn't know what they are!
And finally, ask for references!
